The Kait Cardigan- Free Crochet Pattern

The Kait Cardigan- Free Crochet Pattern

The Kait Cardigan is the cozy sister to The Kait Coverup, and she’s ready to be your new favorite layer! Made with soft and squishy Lion Brand Superwash Merino, it features pretty lace details, a button-up V-neck, and long sleeves for just the right amount of warmth. It’s the perfect piece to toss on as we head into Fall—cute, comfy, and totally wearable with everything.

Keep scrolling for the free version, grab the PDF version in my shop or treat yourself to the kit from Lion Brand Yarn.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over three years since I first introduced The Kait Coverup crochet pattern. When it debuted, it quickly became a favorite, and this summer it has made an impressive comeback with all of you. In fact, it has been my number one selling pattern this season. With that in mind, I decided it was the perfect moment to design a sister version to complement it.

The original Kait Coverup was made using Lion Brand’s Oh Baby Organic Cotton, which has since been discontinued. I wanted to find an alternative yarn that would not only match the original’s softness and drape but also work well for cooler weather, since my new version is a cardigan. One of my top picks from Lion Brand is their 100% Superwash Merino. This yarn is lightweight, incredibly soft, and easy to crochet with, making it ideal for a lacy transitional piece. Additionally, it comes in a wide range of beautiful colors to suit any style. For my cardigan, I chose Briarsmoke, a lovely taupe brown, but this design is versatile enough to shine in whichever hue you prefer.

Constructing The Kait Cardigan

Let’s talk construction. The original coverup was made out of two rectangular panels, seamed together on the front back and sides. When turning it into a cardigan I knew I wanted it to have a bit more structure and that it needed to button up in the front.

Instead of making the main body panels separately I decided to make it in one large piece. To make your Kait Cardigan you’ll start with the right side, creating the front and back at the same time, then you’ll work the center back section before adding more chains and working up the left side which is also both the front and back. When you are done with the main body it will look like this.

This is with the WS facing up. Then you’ll fold down the front sections and seam the sides leaving room for the armholes. (left photo)

Next you’ll add the extra rows to just the front sections of the main body. (right photo). This will create the v-neck line shape.

Then you’ll add an applied ribbing all along the bottom of the cardigan before adding the applied button band. Start at the bottom left panel (where the stitch marker is) and work up and around until you’ve hit the stitch indicated in the pattern along the right panel.

You’ll have placed stitch markers in specific stitches to indicated when to work the button hole rows along the right side. (not pictured here). That will take you all the way down to the bottom and you’ll be ready to attach the buttons to the corresponding rows on the left side.

Then you’ll work directly into the armholes to create your sleeves, decreasing every few rows to create a tapered sleeve. Last you’ll work an applied ribbed cuff to each sleeve. Since the sleeves use double crochets with filet holes they work up surprisingly fast.

Then you’ll just need to weave in your ends, block your piece and you’ll be ready to wear your new Kait Cardigan.

I hope you love her as much as I do!

Cuff

We will be adding an applied ribbed cuff to the bottom of the sleeve, much like we did for the button band.

To ensure a tighter cuff, treat the ch-2 spaces as 1 st.

Ch 9,

Row1:scin 2ndchfrom hook and eachchacross,slstinto next 2stson sleeve, turn. (8sc)

Row 2: sk 2 sl sts, scBLO in each st across, ch 1, turn. (8sc)

Row 3: scBLO in each st across, sl st into next 2 sc along edge of cardigan, turn. (8sc)

Repeat Rows 2-3 all the way around the sleeve.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming.

Use a tapestry needle and the mattress stitch to sew the two ends of the cuff together.

Repeat Sleeve instructions for other sleeve.

Weave in all remaining ends.

Block using your preferred method.

Now you’re all set for Fall! If you make a Kait Cardigan I’d love to see it. Make sure to tag me @meghanmakesdo and use #thekaitcardigan on socials so I can see and share.

As always you can find a PDF version of this pattern in my shop, Etsy and Ravelry or as a kit from Lion Brand Yarn.

Happy Crocheting,
Meghan
