If you’ve been looking for a thick and sturdy crochet stitch then you definitely need to try the thermal stitch. The Thermal Stitch is a thick crochet stitch that is super simple to make. Using just basic single crochet stitches in a unique way you can create this gorgeous crochet stitch too. Find the photo and video tutorials below.

Here is what you’ll need for today’s tutorial:

Worsted weight yarn (I used Brava Worsted from We Crochet)
Crochet hook size F (3.75mm) (I used Clover Amour)

Feel free to substitute the yarn and hook size with what you have on hand. I think this stitch will look great in a variety of yarn weights and textures.

Abbreviations:

ch-chain
yo-yarn over
sk- skip
st(s)-stitch(es)
sc-single crochet
BLO- back loop only

To make the thermal stitch start by chaining any number of chains. For this tutorial I chained 11 which gave me 10 stitches in each row.

Thermal Stitch

To work thermal stitch, work your initial sc row through the BLO of the chains. Then sc working through the BLO of the sc sts and the unworked front loop of the chains. Continue to work sc inserting your hook into the BLO of the row below and the unworked front loop two rows below.

Decreasing: To decrease in thermal stitch, insert hook into back loop of row below and unworked front loop two rows below, yo and draw up a loop, insert hook through next set of back loop of row below and front loop two rows below, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through all 3 loops.

Note that the row after a decrease will need to be worked differently. Work the first TS as you normally would, then skip the next unworked front loop two rows below.

Increasing: To increase in thermal stitch, work two sc into the first set of BLO one row below and unworked front loop two rows below.

Note that the row after an increase will need to be worked a bit differently. Work your first TS as normal, then work your second TS through the next BLO of the row below and the unworked front loop two rows below that you just worked into.

Finishing: When finishing the last row of thermal stitch work a sc through both loops of the row below and the unworked front loop two rows below.
