I love learning new crochet stitches, especially ones that use basic crochet stitches to create something truly stunning. The Spider Stitch is a textured crochet stitch that has an almost romantic look to it. Using just basic single crochet and chain stitches you can create this gorgeous crochet stitch too. Find the photo and video tutorials below.

Here is what you’ll need for today’s tutorial:

Lion Brand Yarn Truboo (I used the color tan)
Crochet hook size H (5.00mm) (I used Furls streamline which worked great with the Truboo yarn)

Feel free to substitute the yarn and hook size with what you have on hand. I think this stitch will look great in a variety of yarn weights and textures.

Abbreviations:

ch-chain
yo-yarn over
sk- skip
st(s)-stitch(es)
sc-single crochet

To make the spider stitch start by chaining an even number of chains. Then you can either start directly with the spider stitch (explained below) or make a row of single crochet into the bottom bumps for more stability.

Spider Stitch

Ch 12, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sk 1 ch, then work a [sc, ch 1, sc] into the next st.

Continue to sk 1 st, then work a [sc, ch 1, sc] in the next stitch until 2 sts remain, sk 1, and sc in the last st to end the first row.

Ch 1, turn. Sc into the first st, sk 2 sts and work a [sc, ch 1, sc] into the ch-1 sp, *sk 2, [sc, ch 1, sc] in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * across until 2 sts remain, sc in last st.

Continue to repeat row 2 until desired length. Note you will always start and end your row with a sc and work a [sc, ch 1, sc] in each ch-1 sp.

Finding the ch-1 sp can be a bit tricky so it can help to look for the four bars of the single crochets. Then insert your hook in between the two sets of bars and work your spider stitch [sc, ch 1, sc].
