The Souline Vest- Free Knitting Pattern
The Souline Vest is a cozy, textured layering piece featuring beautiful stripes and the luxurious softness of Lion Brand Yarn’s 100% Baby Alpaca. Worked seamlessly in the round from the bottom up, the vest splits at the underarms for armhole shaping and features a softly rounded neckline, finished with simple ribbing around the armholes and neckline. The pattern is graded in sizes XS–5X, making the Souline a beautiful and versatile addition to any handmade wardrobe. Find the free pattern below, purchase a digital PDF version in my shop or grab the complete kit from Lion Brand Yarn.
Nothing says Fall more than a handmade sweater, but here in the bay September and October are some of our hottest months. When I set out to design this vest I originally had wanted it to be a pullover sweater but I also wanted it to be something I would actually wear. What has all the coziness I love in a sweater but won’t overheat me during these warmer months? A VEST!
A vest is so versatile. It can be worn as an extra layer on those colder days or alone as a tank/tee when you want some coziness without too much warmth.
When swatching for the Souline Vest I knew I wanted something both classic looking and also eye catching. I decided to try out some textured stripes. After a few failed attempts I finally landed on garter stitch sandwiching a row of eyelets and it was perfect!
I decided to challenge myself with this one too by making the bottom section in the round and then splitting off and working the front and back separately in rows for the top. I had never done this before but it was surprisingly easy. I was able to try on the vest as I went to make sure I had the right length. There were a few moments where I was worried it would be too baggy, but in the end it fit just right. It includes a few inches of positive ease which makes it great for layering. There is some armhole shaping and a bit of neckline shaping in the front.
It’s made using Lion Brand Yarn’s 100% Baby Alpaca which is one of my favorites. It’s super soft and lightweight. Plus since it’s a natural animal fiber you can simply attach another ball of yarn by felting the ends together which means less ends to weave in! It comes in 12 gorgeous colors so you can find the one perfect for you and your wardrobe.
I’ve also included a video tutorial that goes over the basics of this design and highlights any of the tricky bits so you’ll know just what to do as you work up your new vest.
The Souline Vest Knitting Pattern
Materials:
705-1358 yards (4-7 skeins) of Lion Brand 100% Baby Alpaca DK weight yarn (146yd/50g)- shown in Fawn [488-123AT]
3.25mm (24” circular knitting needles)
3.25mm (40” circular knitting needles)
Locking stitch markers
Tapestry needle, scissors, tape measure
Notes:
1.The vest is made in one piece. The bottom is made in the round on 40” circular needles. It then splits at the armhole shaping and worked in turned rows in two sections (upper back and upper front). The front also includes neckline shaping which is worked in two sections (left and right). The shoulders are then seamed together and ribbing is added around the armholes and neckline.
2.Pattern is written as follows XS(S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). See sizing info for measurements to determine which size will fit best.

We will now be splitting the vest into two sections, the front and the back.
Place a locking stitch marker on the cord at the halfway. point to distinguish between the front and back sections.
You will have 102(114, 126, 138, 150, 162, 174, 186, 198) sts on each side of the stitch marker.
Remove the right needle from the current cord and place a stopper on that end. Place the needle on a new cord with a stopper on the opposite end. Use the new needle to knit the first Row of the Back.
We will now be working the Back and Front separately in turned rows.
Upper Back:
Row 1: BO 6(8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 12, 12, 14) sts, K all sts across until sm, turn. (96(106, 118, 128, 140, 152, 162, 174, 184)
Remove the left needle from the cord and add a stopper. Attach the needle to the other side of the current cord that you just used for the first row. Now you will have the front stitches on a cord with stoppers and your back stitches on a cord with needles.
Row 2: BO 6(8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 12, 12, 14) sts, P all sts across, turn. (90(98, 110, 118, 130, 142, 150, 162, 170)
Sizes split here. Find your size and follow those instructions for the remaining armhole shaping.

Upper Front:
We will now be attaching our needles back on to the other cord that holds our remaining bottom stitches. We will work the Upper Front following the same directions as the Upper Back until we reach the end of Row 34(38, 40, 46, 48, 52, 56, 58, 60)
We will now be creating the front neckline with an initial BO Row and then working the right and left sides separately while decreasing along the neckline edge.
Place locking stitch markers after the 23rd(26th, 29th, 32nd 34th, 34th, 34th, 35th, 35th) stitch on each side.
(Initial BO) Row 1: K until st before marker, k1fb into st before marker, then BO every st until you hit the next marker. Remove marker and BO one more st (36, 36, 36, 36, 36, 38, 38, 42, 42 sts bound off), K across.
We will now work up the right side of the tee with the left side stitches still on the cord.

Now you can have fun styling your new Souline Vest. A friend said it’s giving her major Clueless vibes and I love that! If you make one I’d love to see it. Make sure to tag me @meghanmakesdo on socials and use #thesoulinevest.
As always you can find a PDF version in my shop, Etsy and Ravelry or a as a complete kit from Lion Brand Yarn.
Happy Knitting,
