Ever since I made the Nordic Tree Pillow crochet pattern, I have been wanting to make a knit version too. The Nordic Tree pillow using a simple crochet stitch that looks knit so naturally I knew that it’s sister The Pine Forest Pillow needed to come to fruition.

After two years and lots of practice with knitting it’s finally here! The Pine Forest Pillow is deceptively simple. Using only knit stitches in the round it is perfect for beginners. Don’t let the color work scare you. I opted to use duplicate stitch for this pillow to make it more beginner friendly and to hide any carries from the black yarn.

Duplicate stitch is perfect when working with contrasting colors like black and white or when you only need different colors in small spots of your project. If you’ve done crafts like cross stitch and embroidery then you’ll have no problem working the duplicate stitch. If you need some help and want to see the duplicate stitch in action check out my video tutorial below. I’ll walk you through each step and show you exactly how I added the trees to my Pine Forest Pillow.

Tape measure

Stitch marker

20” or 22” square pillow form

Pine Forest Pillow Graph (see below)

Abbreviations:

CO- cast on

K- knit

BO- bind off

PM- place marker

Notes:

1.Pillow is worked in the round.

2.The entire pillow is made using knit stitches.

3.Color work is done using the duplicate stitch technique after the pillow is complete.

4.A graph is provided for reference as to where to place the trees. It helps to use stitch markers to mark out the bottom of each tree.

5.Finished pillow before adding insert measures approx. 20” wide by 20” tall.

6.For a firmer pillow use a 22” pillow form. Note this will stretch the fabric a bit and will produce a larger pillow.

Size:

finished size is 20” X 20”

Gauge:

15 stitches X 24 rows = 4” square in knit stitch in the round.

Special Stitches:

Invisible Joining Method:

CO sts indicated in pattern. Making sure the stitches are not twisted, bring the beginning CO st and the last CO st together. The beginning st will be on the left needle and the last st will be on the right needle. Slip the first CO st, purlwise to the right needle. Then slip the last CO st over the slipped stitch and drop it. Place the slipped stitch back onto the left needle and pull your tail tight.

Duplicate Stitch:

Duplicate stitch is a technique used for color work. You will be making knit stitches on top of the ones already worked using a tapestry needle and a long strand of yarn. Start by drawing the yarn through the bottom of the stitch you want to duplicate. Then insert your needle behind the two bars of the stitch above the one you will duplicate. This creates the right side of the “v”. Then insert your needle back into the bottom of the stitch and pull tight to create the left side of the “v” and complete the stitch. Continue using this method for all other stitches.

Pattern:

Using color A and the long tail method, CO 167, join using the invisible join method. 166 sts on needles.

Round 1: PM, K all sts. (166)

Rounds 2-119: SM, K all sts. (166)

BO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Adding Trees:

Using Color B and the duplicate stitch method, follow the chart provided to add the trees to the pillow. Each tree will be added individually using a tapestry needle and a long strand of yarn.

The graph is read right to left for each row. Each square represents one knit stitch.
