Ever since I designed The Winnie Blanket, I had been itching to use hexagons again. They are probably my favorite shape to crochet and I love how perfectly they fit together. It definitely reminds me of using tan-grams in elementary school.
Late last year I decided that a tote bag made of hexagons would be perfect! As I set out to design it I realized it may be a bit more challenging than I originally expected. I knew I wanted the hexagons to come to a point for the straps, but figuring out how to make that work was definitely a challenge. I ended up printing out a pattern of hexagons on paper and played around with cutting them out to create a 3 dimensional piece. I was ecstatic when I finally got it to work!
Now almost six months later I finally have my completed hexagon tote. So say hello to Mirna! She is made of 26 hexagons and 10 trapezoids, uniquely seamed together to create a truly beautiful bag. I’ve included a detailed video tutorial for this pattern to help you create your own gorgeous tote bag. Find both the written pattern and the video below.
You can also grab a full kit from Lion Brand Yarn! The kit includes four skeins of 24/7 cotton in the color of your choice and a digital copy of the pattern. Grab one at the link below.

Fasten off and use the invisible join to finish. Then weave in ends.
Invisible Join: Fasten off after the last stitch worked. Thread end of yarn onto a tapestry needle. Then insert needle from front to back through the second stitch from the beginning. Pull yarn through, then insert needle into the center of the last stitched worked and pull through. This will create a “stitch” on top of the first stitch in the round and make an even and invisible join.
Trapezoids: (make 10)
Ch 4
Row 1: 5dc in 4th ch from hook, turn. (6)
Row 2: ch 3, 2dc in 1st st, [dc, ch 2, dc] into next st, dc, [dc, ch 2, dc], 2dc in next st, dc into the top of the ch 3 from previous row, turn. (15)
Row 3: ch 3, dc 4, [dc, ch 2, dc] into the ch-2 sp, dc 3, [dc, ch 2, dc] into the ch-2 sp, dc 3, 2dc in top of ch 3 from previous row, turn. (21)
Row 4: ch 3, dc 6, [dc, ch 2, dc] into the ch-2 sp, dc 5, [dc, ch 2, dc] into the ch-2 sp, dc 5, 2dc in top of ch 3 from previous row, turn. (27)
Row 5: ch 3, dc 8, [dc, ch 2, dc] into the ch-2 sp, dc 7, [dc, ch 2, dc] into the ch-2 sp, dc 7, 2dc in top of ch 3 from previous row. (33)
Ch 1, then work sc evenly across the raw edge of the trapezoid. (20)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in beginning end.
Assembly:
Following the chart below, seam your hexagons and trapezoids together using the mattress stitch with right sides up. Then flip entire piece over and fold in half so the trapezoids are lined up with one another. Fold hexagons from the back to the front and seam along the sides, leaving the last trapezoid and hexagon open.
To seam the corners, open up bottom sections and lay the trapezoid over the top of the hexagon so that the bottom part of the hexagon is inside the bag. Then seam the trapezoid on to the hexagon from the outside. Flip bag inside out and then tack the rest of the hexagon to the inside bottom of the bag.
Left: Outside view of the corner; Right: inside view of the corner.
Straps:
Attach yarn to any side of the top of the bag.
Ch 1,
Round 1: sc in same st as join and in each st around making sure to work a sc into each seam where the trapezoids come to a point, sl st to the top of the 1st st to join. (164)
Round 2: ch 1, sc in same st as join and in each stitch around until you reach the first point where the trapezoids connect, ch 100, then sk over the next two trapezoids and sc into the next point, sc around the sides until you reach the next point (on the other side of the bag), ch 100, sk over the next two trapezoids and sc into the last point and around the side, sl st to the top of the 1st st to join. (284)
Rounds 3-5: ch 1, sc in same st as join and in each st around, skipping one stitch in the center of each side, sl st to the first st to join. End round 5 with an invisible join. (278 sts at the end of Round 5).
Weave in all ends. Block if needed.
