The Marigold Cardigan-Knitting Pattern and Make Along

The Marigold Cardigan-Knitting Pattern and Make Along

The Marigold Cardigan is a cozy, oversized knit featuring drop shoulders, bubble sleeves, and chic inset pockets, perfect for layering. Crafted with the stunning colors of Heartland yarn, it uses a beautiful textured stitch that adds depth and character. This intermediate-level pattern is ideal for knitters looking to create a stylish, statement piece with both comfort and flair.

The Marigold was made in collaboration with Rachel from Evelyn and Peter. Rachel designed the crochet version called The Maeve. We will be hosting a Make Along for the month of October sponsored by Lion Brand Yarn. Keep scrolling for all the details and to see how to participate.

What is a Make Along?

A Make Along is an online event where people all over the world make the same pattern(s) at the same time.

The Maeve and Marigold Make Along will run from October 1st-November 4th. Each week we will be working on a different part of the patterns and giving away fun prizes. This is a casual MAL (Make Along) so feel free to go at your own pace or even work ahead.

Check out the official schedule below:

Here is how to participate:

  1. Decide if you will knit the Marigold or crochet the Maeve (feel free to make both!)

  2. Purchase the kit(s) from Lion Brand Yarn which include all the yarn you need for your size, plus a free digital copy of the pattern.

    OR

Purchase the PDF pattern(s) from Meghan Makes Do or Evelyn and Peter and source your own yarn or use some from your stash.
    OR

Use a yarn of your choice and follow along each week with the free versions on our blogs.

  3. Make Along with us and enter to win prizes every week!

Add or subtract rows in a multiple of 4 here to lengthen or shorten the sleeves.

BO leaving a long tail for seaming.

Seaming:

Lay Back Panel and two Front Panels together at the shoulders with RS facing each other. Using your preferred seaming method attach front panels to back panel. There will be 33(33, 33, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38) sts unseamed in the center of the back panel.

Attach the sleeves to the sides of the cardigan, using your preferred seaming method, making sure to align the center of the sleeve with the shoulder seam. Make sure the sleeves are attached evenly from the center shoulder seam, down the sides. Using stitch markers to hold the sleeve in place is recommended.

Fold cardigan so that the back and front panels are on top of each other. Then seam the sleeves from the underarm to the cuff. Seam the sides from the underarm down to the bottom.

Pockets:

Make two

With 32” 5mm needles, CO 33(33, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38) making sure to leave an extra long tail.

Row 1(RS): K across, turn. (33(33, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38)

Row 2(WS): P across, turn. (33(33, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38)

Rows 3-38: repeat Rows 1-2. (33(33, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38, 38)

BO leaving a long tail.

*Steam blocking the pockets is recommended.

Attach Pockets:

On a flat surface, lay one of the front panels of the cardigan flat with the WS facing up. Then lay the pocket RS down on top of the front panel, lining the top edge of the pocket up with the rows just above the pocket opening on the cardigan. Use stitch markers to hold in place if needed.

Using a tapestry needle and the long tails of the pocket, sew the pocket in place all the way around making sure to only sew to the WS stitches of the cardigan. DO NOT sew through to the RS side.

Your pocket will completely cover the pocket opening and should line up with the very top of the cardigan ribbing and extend a few stitches on either side of the opening.

Repeat on other front panel.

Weave in ends.

Collar:

With 60” 5mm needles, pick up stitches evenly around the front of the cardigan starting at the bottom right side with RS facing you.

(approx. st pick ups are 257(257, 262, 262, 278, 278, 278, 278, 278)
