The Gibson Basket- Free Crochet Pattern

The Gibson Basket- Free Crochet Pattern

This extra large, oval bottomed basket is the perfect addition to your home. It’s great for storing your current crochet or knitting project, small throw blankets or extra skeins of yarn. Follow along with the free pattern below or grab a digital PDF in my shop.

One of my goals this year (and pretty much every year) is to work through some of my stash yarns. I was gifted these beautiful skeins of t-shirt yarn from Bobilon Yarns a couple years ago and it wasn’t until this Summer that I’ve been able to put them to use. This basket idea has been living in my head for so long and I am so happy that it has finally been brought to life.

I’ve always wanted to create an oval bottomed basket and knew that this bulky t-shirt yarn would be perfect for creating the basket of my dreams. Ovals can be a bit tricky to keep flat, but with a bit of trial and error I think I’ve gotten it all worked out. The entire basket is made up of single crochet stitches which makes it super beginner friendly. The base is worked going through both loops and the sides are working only in the back loop to create a gorgeous woven looking texture. The handles are added at the end using surface slip stitches which are way easier than they look. You can easily whip up this basket in a weekend.

I’ve also created a full video tutorial so you can easily follow along and get an in depth look at each step. Check it out below.

Lay Basket down and starting at beginning st of the last round, count over 11 sts to the left and place a sm in the 11st. Then count over 10 sts from first marker and place another stitch marker in the 10th st. Then count 33 sts around to the other side and place a sm in the 34th st. Count over 10 sts and place your last marker in the 10th st. Check to make sure you have 33 stitches between the first and last sm so you know your straps will be even.

Straps

With Color B attach yarn on first side to base of basket in line with the sm on the left.

Then using your left hand hold yarn inside the basket and use your right hand to surface slip stitch up the side following the same st all the way up to the sm.

Ch 20 and then fasten off and bring tail through marked stitch on the right.

Reattach Color B yarn to base of basket in line with the sm on the right.

Again, surface sl st up the side following the same st all the way up to the st marker.

Then sl st into the ch sts all the way around. Fasten off and pull tail through marked st to join.

Weave in all ends. When weaving in ends on straps it can help to bring yarn through the base of basket and through strap a few times to secure.
