I took my first trip to Michaels since March over the weekend and it was amazing. I didn’t realize how much I missed walking through craft stores until I got to spend some much needed alone time in the yarn aisle. It was so much fun looking at all the amazing yarns they have and picking out supplies to make some crochet pumpkins. Michaels is a one stop spot for all my crafting needs.
I picked up a few skeins of their Loops and Thread Impeccable yarn in some of my favorite colors. I also found some strips of leather which I knew would make the perfect little stems to add to my pumpkins. I gathered up all the supplies I would need and headed home to get started adding some handmade Fall décor to my home.
These little spider stitch pumpkins work up fast and use just basic crochet skills. You’ll have your own little pumpkin patch in no time! Head to Michaels YouTube channel to view the video tutorial. In the video I go over basic crochet skill such as how to make a slip knot, how to chain and how to single crochet. It’s perfect for beginners!
If you are new to the crochet spider stitch you can check out my video tutorial below for how to do it.
Spider Stitch Pumpkin Crochet Pattern
Materials:
115 yards of Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn or similar worsted weight yarn
tapestry needle
fiber fill
leather strips (approx. 3/4” X 3.5”)
Finished size:
Approx. 6.5” wide and 2.5” tall
Abbreviations:
ch- chain
sc-single crochet
sk- skip
st(s)- stitches
sp- space
Notes:
Gauge is not essential for this project. Experiment with different sized hooks to get the look you like. The larger the hook, the looser weave the crochet will have, so keep that in mind when stuffing your pumpkin.
Pumpkins are made by crocheting one large rectangle. The rectangle is then seamed together on the short sides to create a tube. The tube is then closed at the bottom, stuffed and closed at the top.
ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
Pattern:
Ch 60
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (59)
Row 2: sc in 1st st, *sk 1, [sc, ch 1, sc] in next st, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, sk 1, sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (58)
Row 3: sc in first st, sk 1, [sc, ch 1, sc] in ch-1 sp, *sk 2, [sc, ch 1, sc] in ch-1 sp, repeat from * until 2 sts remain, sk 1, sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (58)
Repeat Row 3 until piece measures 6” high. Fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming.
Finishing:
1.Seam short ends of piece together using the mattress stitch. Then weave the yarn in and out around the bottom of the rectangle and pull tight to close up the bottom. Secure with a knot and pull tail into center of pumpkin.
2. Stuff the pumpkin firmly with fiberfill.
3. With a long strand of yarn weave the yarn in and out around the top of the pumpkin and pull tight and tie a knot to secure. Holding the yarn tight in your right hand, then draw the yarn tightly from the top of the pumpkin to the bottom and insert your tapestry needle up through the bottom of the pumpkin to the top. Pull the yarn tightly so you create a segment in the side of the pumpkin. Repeat around until you have 5-6 segments. Tie the ends of yarn together to secure.
4. Cut a 3/4” X 3.5” piece of leather. Fold in half and punch two holes at the bottom corners of the leather. Secure the leather stem to the pumpkin using a tapestry needle and the tail ends of yarn. Once secure, tie a knot and trim yarn ends.
Enjoy!
