Welcome to week 1 of The Colden Hat Crochet Along! I’m so excited for us to get started. This week we will be working up our gauge swatches and then diving into the brim. You can find all the details below or as always grab a PDF version in my shop.
Hopefully by now you have chosen your yarn. If you are looking for substitutions to the merino camel yarn from Lion Brand you can also use Yarn Bee Must Be Merino from Hobby Lobby or any DK weight yarn. Just make sure to do a gauge swatch and then adjust your hook size as needed.
Scroll down for the written pattern for part one or watch the video tutorial below.
The Colden Hat-Part One
This week we will focus on making our gauge swatch and then working up our brim. Please note that if you’d like to adjust the size of your hat you will need to either add or subtract the beginning chains in multiples of four.

Adult- approx. 21” around and 9” high when closed.
Notes:
1.Pattern is worked in the round throughout.
2.The brim is worked in one piece and then folded in half and ends are joined together during the first round of the main body.
3.Ch 1 does not count as a stitch, ch 3 does count as a stitch.
4.Pattern is worked in multiples of 4 sts. Adjust the size of the hat by adding or subtracting beginning chains by 4.
Special Stitches:
For the brim section we will be working with two stitches, center single crochet (aka the waistcoat stitch) and single crochet in the back loop only (BLO). In case you are not familiar with center single crochet I’ve included a quick tutorial below or you can check out my video tutorial on Youtube.
Center Single Crochet (csc):
Work as you would regular single crochet, but instead of placing your hook into the top of the stitch, insert hook in the front in between the two posts.
Pattern:
Brim:
Ch 80, sl st to first ch st to join.
Round 1(RS): ch 1, sc in same st as join and in each ch around, sl st to top of 1st st to join. (80)
Rounds 2-24: ch 1, csc in same st as join, sc in BLO of next st, *csc, sc in BLO, repeat from * around, sl st to top of 1st st to join. (80)
Fold brim in half so RS is facing out and beginning round and current round are together at the top.
Round 25: ch 1, sc in each st around making sure to go through both the sts in Round 24 and the ch sts of the beginning round, sl st to top of 1st st to join. (80)
