Ready to add this stunning piece to your crochet collection? Let’s dive in!

We’ll start with our back panel working from the bottom up and doing just a bit of armhole shaping. Then it’s on to the front panels, also worked bottom up with a bit of armhole shaping and a slight v-neck shape. Once all three panels are made we will seam the shoulders and the sides, leaving spaces open on each side for the pockets.

The pockets are working up in continuous rounds using Lion Brand Color Theory yarn. Once they have reached the appropriate length we will seam up the bottoms and then sew them into the side openings. The Shaggy Chic yarn helps to create an invisible pocket openings.

The fluffy nature of the Shaggy Chic yarn helps this project to work up quickly but also has it challenges in that it will be hard to see your stitches. You’ll want to make sure you are feeling for your stitches as you go and using stitch markers placed in the first stitch of each row as you go.

As an extra help, I’ve also made a full video tutorial so you can make sure you are working up your Devereaux Vest correctly. I recommend following along as with the written pattern as you watch.

Seaming:

Lay the Back Panel and Front Panels down with shoulders together. Using your preferred seaming method, sew the front and back panels together at the shoulders. You will have 5(5, 6, 6, 6, 5, 5, 5, 6) sts left unseamed along the back panel for the neckline.

Next, fold the vest in half so sides are together. Using your preferred method of seaming, sew the sides together from the under arm down for 6.5 inches. Then sew the sides together from the bottom up 4.5 inches. This will leave an approximately 7 inch gap in the sides for the pockets.

Pockets

The pockets are made in continuous rounds and then sewn closed at the bottom and sewn into the gaps on the sides of the vest.

Using Color B and a 5.5mm hook, ch 42 leaving a long tail.

Round 1: sc into the beginning chain making sure the chain is not twisted, sc into each ch around. (42)

Round 2: sc in each st around. (42)

Repeat Round 2 until the pocket measures 5.5( 6, 6.5, 7, 7, 7, 7.5, 7.5, 7.5) inches tall when laid flat.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Fold pocket flat and using the long tail at the beginning, seam the bottom closed. Do not cut off yarn.

Using stitch markers, pin pocket into the gap on the side of the vest. Half the pocket will be pinned to the back panel and half will be pinned to the front panel to create a circle. Then using the long tail left on the pocket, whip stitch the pocket in place making sure to catch the strands of the Shaggy Chic on the vest as you go.

Once the entire pocket is sewn in place, bring the working yarn through to the WS of the pocket and weave in the end.

Open up the vest so the WS is facing up. Then lay the pocket flat against the inside front panel and using the beginning pocket tail, tack it into place in both corners.

Weave in any remaining ends.
